Green Water

Sunny Position - Why is this a problem?

Sunlight is the main source of energy for algae growth. A plain bowl of water will turn green if left in the sunlight for long enough. Aquariums are best positioned in shady locations.

How can I prevent this?

The best solution is to move your aquarium to a shadier location. If this is not possible try to provide some cover to block some of the light entering the aquarium.

If you cannot do this, you can reduce algae by increasing the amount of maintenance.

The light unit is on for more than 7 hours a day - Why is this a problem?

Sunlight is the main source of energy for algae growth.  The bulb in the light unit is designed to simulate daylight without encouraging algae growth. However, if it is left on for excessive lengths of time it can contribute to green water.

How can I prevent this?

The light unit should be left on for 6-7 hours a day. This will benefit real plant growth without encouraging green water.

Tap Water - Why is this a problem?

The purpose of partial water changes is to dilute the level of nutrients on which algae feed. However, in some areas tap water can contain high levels of these nutrients, defeating the point.

How can I prevent this?

Have your tap water tested for nitrate and phosphate. If levels are high you should use different water for your partial water changes. Bottled still mineral water (not table water) is usually the best water to use but your local aquatic shop may be able to provide you with an alternative.

Regularly test the pH and hardness of your aquarium water. This will indicate if the water you are using is having an adverse effect on your aquarium in the long term.

Filter Cartridge Has Not Been Changed - Why is this a problem?

The filter cartridge is your aquarium's waste bin: trapping waste and absorbing nutrients. Once full it needs to be replaced. If it is not replaced the cartridge, solid waste will stay in the aquarium creating excess nutrients on which algae can feed.

How can I prevent this?

Make sure the filter cartridge is replaced at least every 8 weeks.

The aquarium is well stocked with fish - Why is this a problem?

If there are lots of fish producing waste there will be lots of nutrients for algae to feed on and algae will thrive.

How can I prevent this?

Increasing the frequency of partial water changes will help to keep levels of nitrate diluted. Using a cleaner pump will help keep the aquarium clean and therefore reduce algae growth.

Keep feeding to an absolute minimum.

How do I get clear water again?

Use a Reef One cleaning pad to wipe algae away from the sides of the aquarium. The algae will then be trapped in the filter cartridge.

Keep an eye on the filter cartridge - as the sponge gets dirty remove it and wash it under the tap. By keeping it clear it will continue to trap the algae.

Carry out a series of partial water changes. Continue until the water is clear.

Do not replace all of the water in the aquarium as this will cause worse problems.
